20 days to go!
We are on the countdown to our Winter School Holidays. With the pressure of Report Cards and Student Assessment, it’s important as parents and teachers to focus on a well-balanced holistic approach to supporting our children’s wellbeing and learning. When children have a strong sense of wellbeing, they experience greater success in learning.
Our school is strongly committed to enhancing the wellbeing of our students, which is why we have a range of activities and supports across our school, that help students feel and function the best they can. I encourage all parents to invest in a well-balanced routine of extra-curricula activities at school and outside of school, such as Sports, Music and The Arts, for our students.

P&C Disco
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank our newly appointed P&C Executive Team and the many other amazing parent volunteers, for organising a wonderful disco for our students. The students had so much fun and from the parent and community support, it looked like our parents and community had a great night as well. We have an extremely supportive community and I look forward to many more school community events. Thank you.

Cantabile Success - QLD Youth Music Award
On Friday, May 16, the Robertson Cantabile Choir competed in the Queensland Youth Music Awards. Our section was held at Mansfield State High School. Cantabile competed against four other choirs. Two choirs received a Gold award, and three choirs received Silver. Cantabile was one of the choirs awarded GOLD!! They earned 87 marks, the highest score in that section, along with very positive comments from the adjudicator.
After the other two Senior Primary Choral sections, Cantabile’s 87 marks placed them third overall. The choir has worked very hard leading up to this competition, including many extra morning rehearsals — thank you to the parents for your support!

What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?
A Guide for all parents, and families to enhance your child’s language skills at home
Communication is a cornerstone of learning and growth, and at Robertson State School, we are committed to supporting every child’s journey in developing effective language skills. This article will focus on what parents can do to enhance their child’s language skills within the home environment.
We will also delve further to explore what exactly the diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder is and what it means for students who may be diagnosed with language challenges at school. We believe that by understanding and addressing DLD, we can help to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all learners.
What is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)?
Developmental Language Disorder is a condition that affects a child’s ability to acquire and use language appropriately through verbally expressing themselves and also through comprehending what they may see written or what they may hear. It can impact a student’s vocabulary, grammar and comprehension skills.
Symptoms of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD):
- Limited vocabulary for age
- Difficulty forming sentences
- Challenges understanding and using grammar
- Difficulties following directions or understanding complex language
- Difficulties making friends and making social connections
Here are some teacher tips that teacher/s may already be doing to help all students to enhance their language skills and students with DLD:
Creating a Language-Rich Environment:
- Using visuals, and gestures to support verbal instructions
- Integrate vocabulary-building activities into daily lessons
- Encourage peer collaboration to enhance language skills through interaction
Providing Clear Instructions:
- Breaking down tasks into smaller, more manageable steps
- Using visuals such as charts or diagrams to reinforce verbal instructions
- Allowing extra time for processing and responding.
Promoting Social Interaction:
- Facilitating structured group activities to encourage communication
- Fostering a supportive classroom environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves
Tips to enhance your child’s language skills at home:
Encouraging Daily Conversations:
- Engaging in meaningful conversations with your child about their day
- Asking open-ended questions to promote expressive language skills
- Sharing stories and experiences with your child to enhance their narrative abilities
Reading Together:
- Making reading a daily habit to help build upon their literacy skills
- Discussing the story, characters and plot to target your child’s comprehension skills
- Encourage your child to predict what might happen next e.g., if you are watching tv or playing a game and ask them to describe what might occur next.
Playing Games that Enhance Language Skills:
- Board games, puzzles and card games can be a fun and educational way to engage with your child
- Incorporate activities that involve describing, categorising, and comparing
By creating a rich learning environment within your family home, we can all work together to create an environment that supports the unique needs of every child, including those with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) or language needs. Your partnership with us is invaluable in ensuring each student at Robertson State School reaches their full potential.
With warm regards, and until next time,

This week’s lesson is:
.Be respectful – Listen and follow adults’ instructions
We are learning to: Be respectful - listen to and follow ALL adult instructions. This is because being respectful to all adults, not just our own teachers, is important!
Some students are not showing respect to ALL teachers. Students need to show respect to Classroom Teachers as well as Music Teachers, HPE Teachers, LOTE & Bilingual Art Teachers, Library Teachers, Instrumental Teachers and Relief Teachers and Teacher Aides..
What respect looks like in Music…
Mrs Francis’ expectations of students showing respect:
- Line up in 2 lines outside the door
- Wait quietly until Mrs Francis has opened the door. This is because another class could still be inside trying to focus on their lesson
- Participate in the lesson
- Raise your hand to answer any questions
- Follow the instructions to pack away appropriately
- Make sure you have all your belongings and line up QUIETLY in 2 lines at the door
.
What respect looks like in HPE…
Mr. Rostron and Miss M’s expectations of students showing respect are:
- Stop and Listen while the teacher is giving an instruction
- When the HPE teacher gives an instruction, there are often SAFETY rules that you need to follow. If you are not listening respectfully, then you or your classmates may not be safe.
- Be respectful and careful with equipment
- Respect yourself by giving your best effort - always try your best
- Take turns and ensure that you are fair in games
Mr Rostron reminds you that you should: Respect self, others and equipment at all times.
.
What respect looks like in Library…

When you visit a public library in the community, it is a quiet place for people to enjoy and work in. Some people may be working on assessments, work items or purely just enjoying the books. When we visit our school library it should look and sound very similar.
Mrs Ennis’ expectations of students showing respect are:
- Enter the library quietly
- Whispering or talking in a quiet voice if necessary
- Walking at all times around the library
- Showing respect to the books. If you take a book out to look at, make sure you put it back in the correct place.
.
What respect looks like in LOTE and Bilingual Arts…
Mr Wang and Ms Lu’s expectations of students showing respect are:
- Students are ready for learning with their books and equipment
- Listen respectfully and follow teacher instructions
.
What respect looks like in Instrumental Music and Choir…
- Listen and follow Mrs Thomas, Mrs Francis and Mrs Gray’s instructions
- Turn up on time for rehearsals, lessons and performances
- Be respectful, careful and safe with your own and other people’s instruments
- Respect your band, choir and ensemble mates by making sure you are ready to make beautiful music together!
.
What respect looks like with a Relief Teacher…

A relief teacher is just like any other teacher and deserves to be treated with the same amount of respect. When you arrive to school in the morning and you see that you have a relief teacher you should greet them by saying hello and do what you would normally do for your regular classroom teacher. The classroom rules and school rules are the same. You should continue to show Robertson manners, follow instructions and speak kindly.
Please encourage your child to show respect to all their teachers!
