The school focus this week is:

BE RESPECTFUL:​ I can be responsible, respectful and safe - by self regulating my emotions and behaviour

Students have been focusing on EMOTIONAL REGULATION strategies and breathing activities in class this week.

 

What is self- regulation?

  • Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you
  • It includes being able to: regulate reactions to strong emotions like frustration, excitement, anger and embarrassment
  • Calm down after something exciting or upsetting
  • Focus on a task
  • Refocus attention on a new task
  • Control impulses
  • Behave in ways that help you get along with other people

 

Why is it important?

  • As you grow, self-regulation helps you: learn at school – because self-regulation gives you the ability to sit and listen in the classroom
  • Behave in socially acceptable ways – because self-regulation gives you the ability to control impulses
  • Make friends – because self-regulation gives you the ability to take turns in games and conversation, share toys, and express emotions in appropriate ways
  • Become more independent – because self-regulation gives you the ability to make appropriate decisions about behaviour and learn how to behave in new situations with less guidance from your teachers and parents.

People who can self-regulate can:

  1. Stay calm when something in their life changes or something doesn’t go according to plan
  2. Calm down within a reasonable period of timeand use positive self-talk
  3. Bounce back quickly to doing schoolwork or being with others

 

People who can’t self-regulate... yet...

  1. Act overly silly or “out of control”
  2. Have tantrums or meltdowns
  3. Struggle with transitions between activities
  4. Have difficulty waiting or taking turns
  5. Struggle with being in close proximity to others
  6. Move too quickly or with too much force
  7. Grab, throw or touch things impulsively
  8. Have difficulty walking or waiting in line
  9. Have problems during social interactions eg: talking too loudly, standing too close or touching others
