Zones of Regulation
Identifying our Zones using clues our body gives us
What clues our body gives us about which Zone we are in:
- Are your muscles relaxed or tense? (eg. calm v mad?)
- Is your breathing fast or slow? (eg. excited v focused)?)
- Is your heart beating fast or slow? (eg. mad v happy?)
- Is your brain focused or cluttered? (eg. ready to learn v sick?)
- What does your face look like? (eg. terrified v sad?)
- What sort of words and voice volume are coming out of your mouth? (eg. yelling v tired?)
Can you sit still? Are you slumped over? Do loud sounds annoy you?
- Do you have pursed lips or furrowed eyebrows?
Knowing which zone your child is in, allows us to help:
- IF YOU KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD IS IN THE RED ZONE, THEN WE KEEP YOUR DISTANCE UNTIL THEY COOL DOWN
- IF YOU CAN SEE THAT YOUR CHILD IS IN THE YELLOW ZONE YOU CAN TRY AND HELP THEM GET BACK TO THE GREEN ZONE
- IF YOU KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD IS IN THE BLUE ZONE THEN YOU KNOW WHY YOUR CHILD IS PARTICIPATING LESS AND YOU COULD HELP THEM FIND WAYS TO GET THEMSELVES GOING
- IF YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD IS IN THE GREEN ZONE THEN YOU AND THE TEACHER WILL KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD IS READY FOR LEARNING
