Year 1 Phonics Check – Supporting Early Reading Development
Year 1 Phonics Check – Supporting Early Reading Development
Earlier this term, you may have seen the announcement from the Department of Education regarding the mandatory implementation of the Year 1 Phonics Check in all state schools. This check is a simple screening tool designed to help teachers confirm whether students are making expected progress in their reading journey.
We like to think of it as a quick ‘health check’—a way to see how students are tracking with their phonics knowledge, particularly their ability to decode (sound out) words. Our Year 1 teachers and students have recently engaged with the Phonics Check, and teachers will begin to analyse the results at both class and individual levels. This important data will guide next steps in their teaching and help identify students who may benefit from additional support with decoding skills.
Families can find more information about the Year 1 Phonics Check on the Literacy Hub website https://www.literacyhub.edu.au/for-families/what-is-the-year-1-phonics-check/

Pre-Prep Storytelling Sessions – Building Confidence and Connection
It has been wonderful to see so many smiling faces at our Pre-Prep Storytelling sessions over the past few weeks. Children and their families have enjoyed a variety of engaging stories read by Mrs Ackerley and Mrs Ennis, joined in with songs, explored our library resources, and created themed arts and crafts each week.
Before leaving the library, all children have the opportunity to borrow books to take home and share with their families. This not only fosters a love of reading but also gently introduces them to simple school routines. These sessions are part of our Transition to School Program, designed to help the youngest members of our community move into Prep with confidence and enthusiasm.
If you have a child starting Prep next year or have any younger siblings at home, we’d love for you to join us. Sessions are held in the library every Monday from 2:00–3:00pm. No bookings are required—just come along for a fun and welcoming afternoon, and a great opportunity to connect with our school, staff, and other families.
